Mask Masterclass - Steve Jarand - March 2016
Steve Jarand is a master of mask and improvisation and will be presenting a two-day Mask and Improvisation Masterclass in Christchurch on March 19th and 20th.
Steve is based in Canada and has been part of Loose Moose Theatre in Calgary since 1987, working with teachers such as Keith Johnstone (the creator of TheatreSports) and Shawn Kinley. He travels extensively with his teaching - across North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India - and now we have a chance to work with him here in New Zealand!
Steve’s workshops are inspiring and transformative. Through the use of mask, Steve helps you tap into the raw essence of improvisation. The masks demand the vulnerability and willingness to be in the moment that makes for delightful and inspiring performances. There is no better way to realise the virtue of your instincts, humility and playfulness (and the limitations of your ego and intellect) than trying on a mask or two.
The Fascination of the Masks
What is the difference between good improv and great improv? Good acting and great acting?
It lies somewhere beyond wit, charm and precision.
In this weekend mask intensive, gain some insight into the origins of improvised theatre and of the heart of the performer. Let the mask be the inspiration and allow for a new kind of creativity.
In this course, we will play with character half masks: "Trance-masks" as well as the silent narrative of full masks.
