  • Flatmates – An improvised sitcom (29 May)

Flatmates is a live, improvised sitcom about the relationships and everyday lives of a group of flatmates.

Each performance plays out like a sitcom episode made up on the spot. The same characters return, but nothing is scripted. Every show begins with a brief audience prompt to help shape the characters, then the story unfolds uninterrupted in real time.

Comedy emerges from misunderstandings, shifting loyalties, and the small pressures of shared living, as ordinary moments spiral into something funnier and more revealing.

No audience participation beyond the opening prompt

  • Down To Earth – An improvised sci-fi comedy (26 June)

    An improvised sci-fi comedy

Inspired by shows like Resident Alien, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Mork & Mindy, Down To Earth is a warm-hearted improvised comedy set in small-town New Zealand.

In a quiet community where everyone knows everyone, one resident is hiding a very unusual secret. As friendships form, misunderstandings grow, and local dramas unfold, the show explores what it really means to belong, connect, and be human.

Like all our shows, everything is completely made up on the night. No scripts, no planning, and no audience participation beyond a single opening suggestion.

Expect grounded characters, genuine relationships, awkward moments, and comedy that grows naturally from the world and the people in it.

Performed in an intimate setting at The Piano.

About our shows

Impulse Theatre produces a variety of fun and exciting shows. We love to challenge people’s ideas of what improvisation can be, and there’s something for everyone.

Improv can stray into “adult” content sometimes, but we’re good at reining that in when there are younger members in the audience. If in any doubt, please get in touch, or just let us know before the show.

Some of our favourites

  • Flatmates is our hilarious improvised sitcom, and has proven to be a real crowd pleaser. The story revolves around the amusing interactions and chaotic situations that arise among the diverse group of flatmates.
  • Cracked Mirror is a darkly-funny sci-fi, inspired by shows like Black Mirror and Severance.
  • So That Happened is a fun, lively show where we blend hilarious tales and mishaps from our own lives with improvised comedy sketches.
  • Strangers is one of our more dramatic (but usually very funny) shows. It feels like watching a really good play. So much so, that we’ve had audience ask us after the show, “Who wrote it?”
  • Peregrine V is a full-length improvised sci-fi. It’s loads of crazy sci-fi fun, where the performers don’t know who, or even what, they will be until the show starts.
  • Off Book is a full, improvised musical, that follows a continuous story for the length of the show (just like real musicals).
  • Living Art is one of our newest shows. It takes inspiration from the work of a local artist, who presents some of their art and we improvise! You’ll see scenes, stories, songs, poems, and more — plus some amazing art!
